October 26, 2026 · 2 min read - Checkout Abandonment: a 20-Minute Diagnosis
A diagnosis protocol with a stopwatch: four steps from Shopify's funnel report to the concrete abandonment cause — cost shock, form friction, payment methods. No tools, no agency.

60 to 80% of all carts are never paid for — that is the industry average and, by itself, no cause for alarm. What is alarming is not knowing where in your checkout the abandonments happen and why. Exactly that can be found out in 20 minutes, with built-in tools and a fixed protocol. Set a stopwatch — four steps of five minutes each follow.
Minute 0–5: Read the funnel report
Open Shopify's analytics view for checkout conversion (cart → checkout started → purchase completed) for the last 30 days. Note two ratios: how many cart users start the checkout, and how many of those complete it? Rules of thumb: if the cart→checkout step loses more than half, the problem sits before the checkout — usually costs and trust. If you lose more than 30% inside the checkout, it sits in the process itself. This one distinction halves your search space.
Minute 5–10: Check for cost shock
Walk through your own checkout like a new customer, on mobile, with a realistic cart. The core question: when do you first see the complete costs including shipping? If the answer is 'on the last step', you have found the most cited abandonment reason of every study. Also check the free-shipping threshold: if it sits unreachably high, it doesn't act as an incentive but as a disappointment at the decisive moment.
Minute 10–15: Count the friction
In the same walkthrough, count three things. First: required fields until purchase — more than twelve is a finding. Second: is an account forced, or is guest checkout possible? Third: is there a prominent discount code field? It sends purchase-ready customers coupon hunting into other tabs, and many never come back. Note every point where you yourself hesitated — your own hesitation is a better indicator than it seems.
Minute 15–20: Payment methods and express checkout
Last step: the payment screen. Are the critical payment methods for your market there — for DACH that means PayPal, Klarna invoice, Apple Pay and Google Pay? If the preferred method is missing, a relevant share of buyers abandons without comment; it shows up as drop-off exactly on the payment step. Also check whether express buttons are offered early in the flow: they skip the entire form entry and, on mobile, are often the difference between purchase and abandonment.
The three most common findings — and their fixes
Across our store analyses, three patterns repeat. Finding one: cost shock — fix: show shipping costs on the product page and in the cart, set a realistic free-shipping threshold. Finding two: friction — fix: guest checkout as the default, reduce field count, make the discount field less prominent. Finding three: payment gap — fix: add the two most-demanded payment methods and enable express checkout. None of these fixes needs a relaunch; all three together are typically implemented in one to two weeks.
Automate the 20-minute diagnosis
This protocol covers the checkout — but the checkout is only one of nine typical revenue leaks. Our free store analysis examines your Shopify store read-only across the last 90 days and shows where you are actually losing revenue, including the checkout metrics from this article — no sign-up, no sales call.
